Saint James church in Gdańsk Oliwa

Saint James Church is a Roman Catholic church in Gdańsk's Oliwa district, built with a three-aisle basilica design and a vaulted ceiling shaped like a Latin cross. The interior follows medieval architectural patterns while showing modifications made during later periods.

Construction began in the 14th century and continued into the 15th century, with major rebuilding work completed in 1709 after damage from Swedish forces. These renovations reshaped much of the building's current appearance.

The church hosts Catholic services and displays a mix of architectural styles from different periods within its walls. Walking through the interior, you notice how medieval and Baroque elements blend together, showing how the building changed over time.

Access to the church is from Opacka Street, and you should know that religious services take place at set times throughout the week. It is best to check with the parish office about visiting hours and when services occur.

Inside the church, there is a memorial plaque honoring Edward O'Rourke, a bishop from the period between the world wars, placed near the main entrance. This plaque often goes unnoticed by visitors even though it marks an important figure in the local church history.
