Napoleon Hill in Szczecin

Napoleon Hill is a classical monument in Szczecin featuring a stone column with a slender shaft and broad base, standing about 8 meters tall in total. Located in the northern part of the city near a hospital, it remains one of the few surviving French monuments from that era.

French troops built this hill in 1808 to celebrate Napoleon's birthday while serving as a military observation point outside the city walls. When French rule declined, the monument was reshaped to bear Prussian symbols instead.

The monument displays an Iron Cross instead of Napoleon's bust, reflecting the shifting political influences between French and Prussian rule over the centuries. This change tells the story of the region through its physical symbols.

The monument stands in a residential neighborhood in northern Szczecin and is easily accessible on foot from nearby streets. Since the column's foundation has been exposed to weather, the structure is clearly visible and visitors should expect uneven ground.

The column's foundation has been damaged by soil erosion over the years, exposing its inner construction to view. The decorative fence that originally surrounded the monument is long gone, making it easily accessible to visitors today.
