Helena Majdaniec Summer Theatre, Open-air theatre in Kasprowicz Park, Szczecin, Poland.
Helena Majdaniec Summer Theatre is an open-air venue set into a natural hillside in Kasprowicz Park, Szczecin, overlooking Lake Rusałka. The seating rises in tiers along the slope, with trees framing the sides and the stage positioned at the bottom of the valley.
The site was first developed in the 1930s as a modest open-air stage that made use of the natural slope of the land. Architect Zbigniew Abrahamowicz redesigned it completely, and it reopened in 1976 in its current form.
The theatre takes its name from Helena Majdaniec, a Polish pop singer popular in the 1960s and 1970s whose songs are still familiar to older visitors. The stage hosts concerts, festivals, and open-air shows that draw audiences from across the city.
The theatre is inside Kasprowicz Park and easy to reach on foot, with clear paths through the green space. Since the seating climbs a steep slope, comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially for those heading to the upper rows.
The lighting design installed at the theatre was so original that it helped Szczecin win the national award for Best Illuminated Municipality in Poland in 2009. Evening events still benefit from this, as the light plays off the trees and the natural shape of the hillside.
