Duszatyn Lakes, Natural lakes in Bieszczady Mountains, Poland
The Duszatyn Lakes consist of two water reservoirs located on the western slopes of Chryszczata mountain, formed by a massive landslide blocking the Olchowaty stream.
On April 13, 1907, a landslide displaced 12 million cubic meters of earth, creating natural dams that formed the Upper Lake at 701 meters and Lower Lake at 683 meters.
The formation of these lakes sparked local tales involving devils and meteorites, causing residents to flee to neighboring villages while church bells rang in alarm.
Visitors can access both lakes through marked hiking trails, with the Upper Lake spanning 1.44 hectares and the Lower Lake covering 0.45 hectares of protected nature reserve.
The lakes contain visible remnants of submerged tree roots and stumps beneath their waters, with the Upper Lake reaching depths of 5.8 meters.
