Wieżowiec „Górnik I” w Katowicach

Górnik I is a residential tower at Katowicka Street 65 in Katowice that rises 62 meters across 17 floors. The building features a rectangular layout with 173 apartments and a central core containing three elevators and a staircase serving all residential levels.

The tower was built between 1964 and 1965 following an initiative by Minister Jan Mitręga to house workers from the Staszic coal mine. Its construction represented a broader effort to create modern housing in the post-war city.

The building is part of the Centrum-I residential complex and exemplifies modernist architectural design principles that shaped post-war urban development. Its design reflects planning ideals focused on providing functional homes for the working population.

The building is visible from outside but cannot be entered as it is a private residential building occupied by residents. The best way to appreciate its architecture is to view it from nearby streets in the Koszutka district.

The tower was the first project in the Katowice region to use slipform construction technology, completing one floor per day during the building process. This innovative technique allowed rapid construction and set new standards for high-rise development in the city.
