Superjednostka, High-rise building in Śródmieście, Katowice, Poland
Superjednostka is a residential tower block with 15 floors in central Katowice that extends horizontally for 187 meters and reaches 61 meters in height. The complex includes 762 apartments, 17 commercial units, and 175 underground parking spaces served by 12 elevators.
Architect Mieczysław Król completed construction in 1972 as the largest residential building in Poland at the time. The project reflects the vision of socialist housing and draws inspiration from Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation concept.
The name Superjednostka means super-unit and refers to the building as a self-contained urban structure with integrated infrastructure. The complex today houses apartments for around 3,000 people alongside shops and services on the lower floors.
The residential complex sits in a central location near the Spodek arena in the Śródmieście district. Visitors can view the imposing facade from street level and explore the surrounding area.
The heating system was built directly into the walls after the originally planned radiators failed to arrive. This solution makes the walls warm in winter and eliminates visible heating units inside the apartments.
