Rosa's Passage, instalacja artystyczna w Łodzi
Rosa's Passage is a covered walkway in the Katedralna district of Lodz, running behind a building on Piotrkowska Street and connecting two parallel streets. Thousands of small mirror fragments cover every surface of the passage, forming a mosaic of squares, diamonds, and irregular pieces that catch the light from every angle.
The building behind which the passage runs was a well-known hotel in the 19th century before becoming a municipal tenement. Joanna Rajkowska began attaching the mirror pieces to the walls and surfaces in 2013, working on the installation over several years.
The name Rosa comes from the daughter of artist Joanna Rajkowska, who went through a serious eye illness as a child. Walking through the passage means stepping into a personal story told through light and reflection rather than words.
The passage connects two streets behind Piotrkowska Street and is free to enter, generally accessible from early morning to late evening. The floor can be uneven in places, so it is worth slowing down, especially as the reflections from the mirrors can make it harder to judge depth.
The mirror fragments are arranged to follow the structure of the human retina, turning the whole passage into a walkable image of the eye. Knowing this changes how you look at each individual piece, which is no longer just decoration but part of a precise biological drawing.
