Açude-ponte de Coimbra, Weir and road bridge on Mondego River in Coimbra, Portugal.
The Açude-ponte de Coimbra is a weir combined with a road bridge that crosses the Mondego River. The structure creates a water reservoir while allowing vehicles to travel across it at the same time.
This infrastructure project was built between 1978 and 1981, creating a permanent water mirror in front of the city. The work transformed how the river functioned in Coimbra.
The structure maintains water levels for recreational activities and urban landscape enhancement, contributing to the daily life of Coimbra residents.
Visitors can walk along the structure or drive across it while viewing the water below. The best time to visit is during clear weather when you can see the surrounding landscape and water surface clearly.
A fish passage system was installed in 2011 to allow fish to migrate through the structure. More than three million fish passed through during its first two years of operation.
