Cerca romana e árabe, Roman and Moorish defensive wall in Évora, Portugal
The defensive wall stretches for nearly two kilometers, enclosing a ten-hectare area of the historical center with stone towers positioned at intervals.
Construction began in the third century during Roman rule, with sections added during Moorish occupation between 712 and 1166.
The wall structure displays military architectural elements from Roman, Visigothic, and Islamic periods, reflecting the successive civilizations that inhabited Évora.
The municipality of Évora maintains the wall structure, which received National Monument status in 1922 and UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 1986.
The Queen Isabel Gate preserves an original Roman arch with remnants of the Cardo Maximo road visible beneath its stonework structure.
