Chafariz da Praça do Giraldo, Renaissance fountain in Praça do Giraldo, Portugal.
Chafariz da Praça do Giraldo is a Renaissance marble fountain with eight spouts that flow into a circular basin. A casket-shaped structure topped with a bronze pinnacle rises from the center, creating a distinctive silhouette on the square.
Architect Afonso Álvares designed the fountain in 1571 as part of King Sebastian's modernization plan for Évora's center. It replaced earlier water structures that once occupied the square.
The fountain sits at the heart of the square and has served as a gathering place for centuries. Its eight spouts connect to the surrounding streets, making it a natural anchor point where locals and visitors naturally pause and linger.
The fountain remains functional and you can watch water flowing into the basin. Note that the water is not safe to drink due to birds in the square leaving their mark on the water.
The fountain holds special significance for Évora University students who weave it into their traditions. They use its waters during initiation ceremonies for new students, giving the place an unexpected connection to campus life.
