Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval

The Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval is a noble residence in Évora with a distinctive pentagonal tower and two interior courtyards. The building houses multiple sections, including a church with a Gothic doorway and exhibition rooms filled with historical objects.

The site was originally a Moorish fortress that burned in 1384 and was later completely rebuilt. In the 17th century, the structure took its present form after the Cadaval family acquired and expanded it.

The rooms display family portraits and religious artworks that show how the nobles lived and what they valued. These pieces help visitors understand the daily life and beliefs of a wealthy family across several centuries.

The rooms are spread across multiple levels and can be explored at your own pace. It is worth setting aside time for the church, as it is an important part of the visit.

The church space contains decorative tile panels depicting Saint Lawrence Giustiniani, a lesser-known religious saint. These glazed tiles reveal the family's artistic preferences and differ from typical motifs found in other noble chapels.
