Ilha do Farol, Barrier island settlement in Ria Formosa Natural Park, Portugal

Ilha do Farol is a barrier island settlement in Ria Formosa Natural Park, stretching across several kilometers of white sand beaches. The island connects with the neighboring Ilha da Culatra through a continuous shoreline, linking both communities together.

The Cape Santa Maria Lighthouse was built in the mid-19th century, marking the beginning of modern maritime navigation along this coast. The island developed as a settlement around this essential maritime infrastructure that safely guided merchant vessels.

The community lives in traditional white, blue, and yellow houses that shape the village's character. This building style reflects the fishing heritage that still defines daily life on the island today.

Regular ferry connections depart from Faro and Olhão, getting you to the island in about 30 minutes. The best time to visit is in the morning when weather is more stable and the beaches are less crowded.

Two separate piers serve different parts of the island, letting you explore both the Farol and Culatra communities in one trip. This split arrangement is a practical solution for the scattered settlement pattern that sets the island apart from typical beach destinations.
