Cetatea Veche a Romanului, Medieval fortress in Roman, Romania.
Cetatea Veche a Romanului is a medieval fortress in Roman, situated on an elevated plateau along the left bank of the Moldova River. The site features wooden palisades reinforced with earth walls and defensive trenches that encircle the grounds.
The fortress was constructed between 1375 and 1391 under the rule of Petru I Musat and served as the residence of Roman Voda. As a princely seat, it shaped the political development of Lower Moldavia during that period.
The fortress marks the location where the first known internal Moldavian document was issued on March 30, 1392, representing a milestone in regional documentation.
The site stands on church property and visits require prior arrangement with the Archdiocese of Roman. Plan time for the journey to reach this remote archaeological location.
The defensive system included an uninterrupted chain of dugouts with reinforced exterior walls. This layout allowed guards to maintain continuous observation across the fortified grounds.
