Codrul secular Runc, Nature reserve in Neamt County, Romania
Codrul secular Runc is a protected woodland area with ancient beech trees covering the Runc Hill area at the boundary between two counties. The reserve spans about 57.6 hectares and sits between Neamt and Bacau, accessible via county road DJ156H.
The forest received official protection in 2004 through government decision to preserve the ancient beech trees and local biodiversity. This designation recognized the ecological value of this mature forest formation.
The forest area is closely linked to nearby monasteries that shape both the spiritual and natural character of the region. Visitors can observe how the woodland and sacred sites are interwoven in the local landscape.
The forest is accessible via county road DJ156H, which connects from nearby Izvoare village and links to the main highway. Visiting during warmer months is recommended as the woodland paths are easier to navigate then.
Some beech trees in this woodland reach heights of 60 meters, creating special soil conditions that support rare plant species. These tall trees are why the forest developed its own micro-environment with uncommon vegetation.
