Gudermes, Railroad junction city in Chechnya, Russia.
Gudermes is a city in the eastern part of the Chechen Republic, located about 36 kilometers east of Grozny along the banks of the Sunzha River at 55 meters elevation. The settlement extends along the river course and forms an important junction for regional rail traffic in several directions.
The locality officially received town status in 1941 after evolving from a rural settlement into a railway center. The expansion of rail lines fundamentally changed the structure of the settlement and made it a junction in the transport network of the northern Caucasus.
The settlement serves as an administrative and transport center in the region, showing the typical development of a railway town in the eastern Caucasus. A military training facility for Russian special forces operates on the town grounds, preparing personnel from across the country since its opening and playing a visible role in local daily life.
The city sits on several rail connections leading to Rostov-on-Don, Baku, Astrakhan, and Mozdok, and travelers from different parts of the region pass through. Those arriving by train will find a transfer point here for onward journeys into the eastern Caucasus and beyond.
In July 1999, the city recorded a temperature of 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit), one of the highest values ever measured in Russia. This extreme heat belongs to the rare weather records documented in the northern Caucasus region.
