Katun Nature Reserve

The Katun Nature Reserve spans 151,664 hectares across the Katunsky Ridge, containing glaciers, alpine meadows, and 135 mountain lakes at elevations from 1,300 to 3,280 meters.

Russian geographer Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky proposed the creation of a protected area in Central Altai in 1917, but the reserve was officially established in July 1991.

The reserve territory includes ancient burial mounds, stone sculptures, and rock carvings that document the presence of early civilizations in the Altai Mountains.

The reserve offers three educational hiking routes, including trails to Upper Multinsky Lake, Poperechnoye Lake, and Lake Taymenye through the Kazinikhinsky mountain pass.

The reserve contains habitats of 700 vascular plant species, 56 mammal species, 161 bird species, and borders Mount Belukha, the highest peak in Siberia.
