Museum of the World Ocean, Maritime museum in Kaliningrad, Russia.
The Museum of the World Ocean is a national museum in Kaliningrad with exhibitions on marine biology, oceanography, navigation technology, and underwater research. The complex includes several buildings along the Pregolya River embankment and historic vessels permanently moored alongside.
The museum opened in 1990 shortly before the Soviet Union dissolved, aiming to preserve Russia's maritime heritage. Over the following years, additional ships and exhibition buildings were added, expanding the site along the riverfront.
The name reflects the world's oceans and Russia's long seafaring tradition along this Baltic coast. Visitors walk aboard historic ships and experience how crews once lived and worked in close quarters.
The museum complex opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the year. Some vessels have steep ladders and narrow passageways, so comfortable footwear is helpful.
A special glass cube called the Water Cube houses aquariums with sea life from different oceans around the globe. The structure stands directly on the quay and appears through its transparency like a glowing pavilion on the water.
