Gully of Petrushino, War memorial site near Taganrog, Russia
The Gully of Petrushino is a war memorial on the edge of Taganrog, Russia, marked by an 18-meter stela and several commemorative structures. Paved paths and information panels guide visitors through the grounds.
During the German occupation between 1941 and 1943, thousands of civilians and prisoners were shot at this gully. After the war, the site was turned into an official place of remembrance.
The site serves as a central gathering place for annual commemoration ceremonies held on August 30, marking the liberation of Taganrog. Local residents use this location to honor those who perished and keep their stories present in the community.
The grounds are open to visitors and the marked paths make it easy to find your way around. The terrain can get slippery after rain, so a visit during dry weather is a good idea.
A 14-year-old boy survived the mass shootings because local residents risked hiding him. He is one of the few known survivors of these executions, and his account is recorded at the site.
