Taganrog

Taganrog is a port city positioned on the northern coast of Taganrog Bay, where the Sea of Azov forms a natural harbor that shapes the town's layout. Wide avenues run through the historic center, while industrial neighborhoods occupy the outskirts and give the cityscape a working character.

Peter the Great founded this port in 1698 to serve as the first Russian naval station on the Sea of Azov, marking the start of southern maritime expansion. During the 19th century, the town grew into a busy trade center that attracted merchants from different regions.

Throughout the year, residents gather at waterfront parks where local musicians often perform folk songs and contemporary music that reflect the maritime character of the town. Families and groups of friends spend warm evenings in shaded squares near the theater district, where outdoor readings and small performances keep the literary tradition alive.

Trams and buses connect residential neighborhoods with the central railway station, making most districts relatively easy to reach. Because the main streets run parallel to the shore, the clear orientation helps visitors explore on foot or by public transport.

A stone staircase built in the early 19th century leads from the historic center straight down to the beach, funded by Greek merchants who once traded here. Small fishing boats still moor near this stairway, which offers a direct view over the bay.
