Immeuble du restaurant Yar, Historical restaurant building in Meshchansky District, Moscow, Russia.
The immeuble du restaurant Yar is a 19th-century city building at the corner of Kuznetsky Most and Neglinnaya Street, in the Meshchansky District of Moscow. The two-story structure was designed by architect Alexander Kaminsky and has a neoclassical facade with decorative details.
The building opened in 1826 as the home of the Yar restaurant, founded by French restaurateur Tranquille Yard, and quickly became one of the most visited addresses in Moscow. Over the decades the restaurant moved to another location, and the building was rebuilt and converted several times.
The Yar was a favourite meeting spot for Moscow writers and artists, who would gather there after theatre evenings or concerts. Today the ground floor of the building is occupied by shops, and most visitors pass through without knowing what once happened inside.
The building stands at a busy central crossroads in Moscow, within walking distance of several metro stations. It is easy to spot from the street as it sits on a corner, and the facade can be viewed at any time without entering.
The Tretyakov brothers, who later founded the famous gallery bearing their name, bought the building in the 1870s and had it altered to suit their purposes. This connection to one of the most influential collector families in Russia is barely visible today but left a clear mark on the building's history.
