Gorodskoy Prud, reservoir in Russia
Gorodskoy Prud is a large reservoir in central Ekaterinburg spanning approximately 3.3 kilometers in length with an average depth of 3 meters. The water is regulated by a dam that controls flow from and to the Iset River.
The reservoir was established in 1723 as the first water storage on the Iset River and became central to how the city developed around its shores. In the 20th century, embankments were built and cultural buildings erected, transforming it into an urban gathering place.
The name refers simply to its central location within the city. The shoreline is lined with buildings, theaters, and offices that show how this water body shaped where the city grew and developed.
The reservoir is accessible via walking paths that run along the shoreline and include benches for resting. Weekends and warmer months draw more visitors, while weekdays remain quieter and offer better conditions for peaceful walks.
In colder months the surface freezes over, becoming an unexpected place for ice walks or winter scenery viewing. This seasonal shift gives the location a natural, changing quality throughout the year despite its urban setting.
