Railway Bridge in Perm, Railway bridge in Perm, Russia
The Railway Bridge in Perm is a steel structure spanning approximately 840 meters across the Kama River, supported by ten metal arches resting on massive granite-clad stone pillars. Its double-track design allows trains to cross the river and traverse the region with two lines of traffic.
Construction of this first bridge over the Kama began in 1897 using iron from the Votkinsky factory and opened for traffic in January 1899. The project marked a major milestone in connecting this Kama crossing point to Russia's expanding railway network.
The bridge represents a vital link in the Trans-Siberian Railway, positioning Perm as a central hub connecting western and eastern Russia. Local residents regard it as a symbol of their region's industrial strength and its role in building modern Russia's infrastructure.
The best time to view this bridge is during daylight hours when light highlights its metal structure and passing trains are visible. The best views are found from the river banks or nearby vantage points that offer clear sightlines to the entire span.
Assembly of this bridge required specialized riveting techniques, as over 4,000 tons of metal components had to be joined using heat. This hand-crafted method was cutting-edge for its era and made the project a feat of late industrial engineering.
