Bezinom, lake in Chechnya, Russia
Bezinom, also known as Lake Kezenoyam, is a mountain lake in the Chechen Republic situated at nearly 1,870 meters above sea level and surrounded by steep slopes and rocky peaks. The water reaches depths of 74 meters and spans more than 2 kilometers from north to south, with clear, cold water that reflects the surrounding mountain landscape year-round.
The lake was shaped by glacial activity many centuries ago, with ice carving out the deep basin that now holds its water. Over generations, the area remained largely unchanged and is now protected to preserve the natural landscape for future visitors.
The lake holds significance in local traditions tied to the mountain landscape, where Chechen and Dagestani communities maintain ways of life connected to the water and high altitude environment. Visitors can observe how people use the shores for fishing and gathering, reflecting generations of relationship with this mountain setting.
The lake can be reached from Grozny in about two hours, with the final stretch involving a winding mountain road that is unpaved and curves through the landscape. Because the area is protected, visitors should leave no trash and respect the natural setting while exploring this quiet retreat.
The lake is home to a rare fish called Salmo ezenami found nowhere else in the world, a cold-water trout adapted to survive in these high mountain waters. However, the population faces pressure from introduced fish species like European chubs that prey on young fish and compete for space.
