Tusheti Protected Landscape

Tusheti is a protected mountain landscape in eastern Georgia featuring forests, high meadows, and mountain lakes scattered across steep valleys and plateaus. The terrain includes dense woodlands that transition into open alpine areas with numerous streams and small water bodies.

The region shows signs of human settlement dating back to ancient times, with evidence of occupation spanning multiple millennia. Medieval stone towers built by residents still stand today, marking how people organized their communities in this mountain environment.

Local communities here have practiced pastoral herding for centuries, maintaining traditional ways of raising livestock and processing wool. These practices shape how people use the land and move through the seasons.

Access to the region is easiest during the warmer months when mountain roads are passable and weather conditions are more stable. Winter months present significant challenges for reaching the area and require advanced planning.

The area is home to several rare animal species including large predators and specialized mountain birds that are seldom spotted anywhere else in the Caucasus. Encountering wildlife at these high elevations surprises many visitors who may not expect such creatures in remote mountains.
