Tusheti National Park is located in the East Caucasus Mountains and features alpine meadows, glaciers, and river systems across a wide range of elevations. The terrain spans from lower valleys to high peaks, creating distinct ecological zones throughout the park.
The park was established in 2003 by the Georgian Parliament with international support from the Global Environment Facility and World Bank. This partnership created a protected area development program to preserve the mountain region.
Local communities here practice traditional livestock herding and create handcrafted goods like textiles and felt items that reflect their way of life. These crafts are deeply woven into the daily rhythm of the mountain villages.
The park visitor center provides information and assistance with planning hiking routes across the mountains. Conditions and accessibility vary considerably depending on the season, so it's helpful to check ahead before visiting.
From October through June, the mountain villages become cut off from road access by snow and difficult terrain. Only a handful of residents choose to remain in their homes during these long isolated months.
