Tsoy-Peda

Tsoy-Peda is a cemetery with 42 burial structures from the 13th to 15th centuries located along the Argun River in Chechnya. The site contains varied grave monuments and stone inscriptions that document medieval burial practices in the North Caucasus region.

This burial ground emerged during the medieval period and served as a cemetery for local populations across centuries. The stone inscriptions show that the site was in continuous use from the 13th century onward.

The cemetery features stone markers called kebze that reflect regional burial customs and memorial traditions of the Chechen people. These monuments show how families have honored their deceased across many generations.

Visiting requires special permits since the site is in a military-controlled area near an international border. Visitors should contact relevant authorities beforehand and arrange all necessary documentation.

Historical records tell of a severe epidemic when people came to this cemetery to spend their final days there. This unusual practice reveals the deep spiritual importance the place held for the community.
