Erzi Nature Reserve, Protected nature reserve in Ingushetia, Russia
Erzi Nature Reserve is a protected area on the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus in the Russian republic of Ingushetia, cut through by deep river valleys. The terrain is steep and mountainous, sitting within the Dzheyrahsky Assinsky basin.
The reserve was established in 2000 to protect the mountain landscapes and historical sites of the northern Caucasus. Its creation followed years of study showing that the area held both rare ecosystems and ancient structures worth preserving.
The area contains historical structures such as defensive towers and temples that reflect Ingush architectural traditions. These monuments shape the landscape and tell of long human settlement in the region.
Entry to the reserve requires advance permission from the administrative office in Nazran, as the area is subject to strict rules. Visitors should arrange this well ahead of their trip, since access is generally limited to scientific or educational purposes.
The reserve holds oak and beech forests in its lower sections and alpine meadows higher up, creating very different habitats within a short distance. This range of environments explains why the area shelters an unusually wide variety of bird and mammal species found in the Caucasus.
