Shan

Shan is a mountain summit in the Caucasus Range located in Georgia, rising prominently with its snow-covered peak visible from surrounding valleys. The northern and southern faces feature steep rock formations and multiple pathways that climbers can choose depending on their experience level.

The first documented ascent was completed by English mountaineers in 1888, while the initial south face climb took place 15 years later. These early expeditions established the foundation for exploration of the peak by subsequent generations of climbers.

The mountain's name appears in six regional languages, reflecting its position at the crossroads of Georgian, Russian, and Ingush territories.

The climb requires preparation for extreme conditions, as temperatures drop well below freezing at higher elevations and wind becomes particularly intense. Visitors should expect variable snow cover and be ready for extended time spent at high altitude.

The name derives from the Ingush language and means ice, fitting for a peak that remains snow-covered nearly year-round. The abundance of established routes offers varied approaches suitable for different climbing abilities.
