Buildings of the Northern Insurance Company

The Northern Insurance Company complex consists of two structures in Russian neoclassical style, with the western building featuring a clock tower and the eastern section displaying a neoclassical rotunda. The entire ensemble spans five stories with large square office windows distributed across the full facades.

The ensemble was created in 1911 following an architectural competition with 22 submitted projects, when its builders designed offices for the insurance company. The structure was later repurposed when government institutions moved into its spaces.

The structures display a blend of classical elements and Russian design traditions that reflect early 20th-century architectural thinking. Visitors notice how the facades with their large windows merge functional modernity with historical style elements.

The site is visible from public areas and lies within a mixed commercial district, so visitors will find an active surrounding environment with good accessibility. The best time to visit is during daytime hours when nearby businesses and institutions are open and the architecture receives optimal lighting.

The architects deliberately chose window proportions and tower heights that harmonize with the neighboring Church of St. Nicholas, creating spatial balance in the urban landscape. This careful coordination between the modern office building and the historic church is particularly evident from the street.
