Heroes of Plevna, Memorial chapel at Ilyinsky Square, Moscow, Russia
Heroes of Plevna is an octagonal cast-iron pavilion located on Ilyinski Square in Moscow. The structure rises on a low pedestal and features four relief panels set into its lateral faces.
The memorial was built in 1887 by Russian grenadiers to honor their fallen comrades. These soldiers died during the siege of Pleven in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 to 1878.
The relief panels on the sides show scenes from the war that visitors can see and contemplate today. They capture ordinary moments and illustrate how this period was preserved in stone.
The memorial sits near the Kitay-gorod metro station exit and is easy to reach. The grounds are accessible, and visitors can view and walk around the structure from street level.
The cast-iron structure contains inscriptions with names of grenadiers who died during the war. These names are engraved directly into the metal, documenting individuals who did not survive that conflict.
