Botanical garden of the Pyatigorsk State Pharmaceutical Academy
The Botanical Garden of the Pyatigorsk State Pharmaceutical Academy is a research facility housing around 870 plant species arranged in distinct sections throughout the grounds. The facility includes open areas, a greenhouse with tropical plants, and specialized zones such as the Pharmacopoeia section containing over 200 species of medicinal herbs.
The garden was founded in 1946 to cultivate medicinal plants for medical research and teaching purposes. Since 1949, students and scientists have used the facility, and from the 1960s onward, the collection expanded through specimens from the Caucasus and later from Africa, Asia, and other regions.
The garden reflects how plants are used in medicine and daily life, showing the connection between nature and human health. Visitors can observe which species serve healing purposes and understand the role of plants in treating common ailments.
The garden is open year-round and easy to explore in comfortable shoes, with paths winding through different sections. Visitors should take time to read the information signs that describe the plants and their uses.
A tree called the paper tree grew in a deteriorating greenhouse and survived the winter outdoors despite normally requiring warmth. Its bark is rich in fibers that can be used to make paper.
