Salair National Park, Protected area in Altai Krai, Russia
Salair National Park is a protected area in Altai Krai, covering the forested western slopes of the Salair Ridge in southwestern Siberia. The terrain is made up of low wooded hills, open meadows, and river valleys spread across several districts of the region.
The park was created in 2020, making it one of the newest protected areas in Russia. Before that, the forests of the Salair Ridge had been used for timber and other resources for many generations, which shaped the landscape visitors see today.
The Salair Ridge sits between the great plains of western Siberia and the higher mountain ranges to the south and east, giving the park a character that feels neither fully flat nor alpine. Visitors passing through notice how the forest shifts between open groves and denser stands, depending on the slope and soil.
Barnaul, the regional capital, is the most convenient starting point for reaching the park. Because the area has little tourist infrastructure, it is a good idea to come prepared with supplies and to check local conditions before setting out.
Although the park was only officially established in 2020, some of the aspen and Siberian pine trees growing there are several centuries old. These old trees survived past logging periods, which makes their presence all the more surprising given how recently protection arrived.
