Kuznetsk Fortress, Federal cultural heritage site in Novokuznetsk, Russia
Kuznetsk Fortress is a stone fortification with cannons positioned on a hill overlooking the Tom River in the eastern part of Novokuznetsk. The structure offers views across the city and surrounding landscape.
The fortress was built in 1800 as a military outpost to defend the region during the early 1800s. It emerged during a period when Russia was securing its eastern territories.
The site houses an archaeology museum with mammoth tusks and stone tools that show how human settlements developed in the region over time.
The walk up to the fortress passes the Transfiguration Cathedral and takes about 15 minutes from the city center. Visit during daylight hours when the paths are easy to see and you can explore the surroundings.
Only about one-fifth of the original 1810 stone ramparts survive today. These remaining walls show how Russian military builders constructed defenses and what weathering has done to them over nearly 200 years.
