Protest

Protest is a granite sculpture in Gärdet composed of three tall stone blocks, with the central block shaped as a raised fist reaching upward. The arrangement of these elements creates a striking presence in the urban landscape.

Swedish artist Torsten Fridh created this monument in 1986 as a commemoration of International Workers Day demonstrations. The work arose from a period when social movements sought strong symbolic forms.

The raised fist represents the struggle for workers' rights and democratic values in Swedish society. This public work stands as a lasting symbol of these social movements in the city.

The sculpture stands in the Gärdet park in the Östermalm district and is reachable on foot from central Stockholm. The location is freely accessible and can be visited at any time.

The work combines three separate granite blocks into a unified composition, with the central block transitioning from rough surface into a clearly recognizable hand shape. This transformation from raw stone to formed gesture gives the piece an unusual crafted quality.
