Raffles Institution, Secondary school and junior college in Marymount, Singapore
Raffles Institution is a secondary school and junior college located in the Marymount neighborhood of Singapore. The campus includes modern classrooms, specialized laboratories, sports facilities and performance spaces for students.
Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles founded this school in 1823, making it the oldest continuously operating educational institution in Singapore. The school moved its location several times over the decades before settling at the current Marymount site.
The school divides students into five houses called Bayley, Buckley, Hullett, Moor and Morrison, which compete against each other in sports, arts and academic events throughout the year. Each house builds its own community and fosters loyalty among members.
The campus can be reached via Bishan or Marymount MRT stations, with several bus routes stopping near the entrance. Visitors should note that access to the grounds is typically restricted during school hours.
Selected students can skip O-Level examinations through the Raffles Programme and move directly to A-Level studies in a six-year integrated path. This system shortens the usual separation between secondary and pre-university education considerably.
