Pai

Pai is an administrative district in Mae Hong Son covering mountainous terrain where the Pai River flows through valleys surrounded by dense forests. The area includes seven subdistricts connected by roads and valleys, with numerous waterways and natural hot springs scattered throughout.

The district received its name in 1477 when Prince Si Chai named the river after white elephants that fled during a battle in the region. This naming event became part of the area's identity and has been remembered through generations.

Local communities here blend Thai, Shan, and minority ethnic traditions in their daily lives and celebrations. This cultural mix is visible in markets, temples, and the way people gather in the towns and villages throughout the region.

Exploring the region works best with a motorbike or shared taxis that connect the settlements along mountain roads. Roads wind through the hills, so daytime travel and familiarity with local routes make navigation easier.

Natural hot springs dot the mountainous landscape, with water temperatures reaching around 39 degrees Celsius. Some of these springs have been developed into small bathing spots where visitors can soak in the warm water.
