Lake Bafa, Nature reserve and bird sanctuary in Muğla and Aydın, Turkey.
Lake Bafa sits across Muğla and Aydın provinces and is a large body of water ringed by steep hillsides covered with olive trees. The southern shores slope more gently and open into winding coves with small islands scattered throughout.
The lake formed roughly 3,000 years ago as the Büyük Menderes River deposited sediment that gradually closed off a coastal gulf. This natural change created a sheltered space where Greek and Byzantine communities later built their settlements.
The ruins of ancient settlements around the lake, including remains of Heraclea, show how communities lived here for thousands of years. You can still see stone structures and artifacts from these earlier times when you walk along the shore.
The southern shore is the easiest place to start exploring, with simple paths and viewpoints that let you see across the water. Bring water and sun protection, as the sun is strong here and shade is limited along the open shores.
The waters here host migratory birds that stop on their long journeys between Africa and northern regions. In spring and autumn especially, thousands of these birds fill the shores and coves, creating a natural spectacle that sticks with you.
