Lin An Tai Historical House and Museum, Historical house museum in Zhongshan District, Taiwan
The Lin An Tai is a house museum in Zhongshan District showcasing the architectural style of merchant residences from southern Fujian during the Qing era. The compound includes a main hall with ancestral shrine, side wings for living quarters, service rooms, and a front garden pond with stone bridges.
The estate was built between 1783 and 1785 as the residence of a merchant whose family came from Anxi County in Fujian. The original location near today's train station faced demolition, but protests led in 1978 to relocation and reconstruction at the current riverside site.
The name combines the family's ancestral home with their hope for peace and prosperity in the new settlement. Visitors see today the layout of a courtyard house where living and work areas surround open inner yards and are separated by low thresholds and carved door frames.
The museum is located on Binjiang Street near Yuanshan metro station and closes on Mondays for a rest day. Rooms are connected by stairs, with ground-level outdoor areas allowing for a calm walk through gardens and inner courtyards.
Large stones in front of the entrance once served as ballast on trading ships sailing from the mainland across the Taiwan Strait. After arrival, these stones remained on land as a sign of the journey and as practical building material.
