Hengchun Township

Hengchun Township is a municipality at the southern tip of Taiwan, composed of seventeen villages spread across both coastal and inland areas. The land includes varied terrains with seaside communities and more interior settlements.

The area was known as Longkiau during Dutch colonial rule and received its current name in 1875 from Qing viceroy Shen Baozhen, meaning Eternal Spring. This renaming marked an important shift in how the region was understood and administered.

The township maintains traditions of the Rukai and Paiwan indigenous peoples through local festivals and handcrafted works that continue to play a role in daily community life.

The township is best reached by taking the High-Speed Rail to Zuoying Station, then switching to the Kenting Express bus service to reach the main center. The journey is straightforward and well-marked from major transport hubs.

The area preserves four ancient city gates from Qing dynasty fortifications, representing the only complete set of such defensive structures in southern Taiwan. These gates offer a rare glimpse into the region's colonial military architecture.
