Eluanbi Lighthouse, Maritime navigation tower in Hengchun Township, Taiwan.
Eluanbi Lighthouse is a 21-meter white tower at the southern tip of Taiwan, where the Taiwan Strait meets Pacific Ocean waters. The tower stands in Hengchun Township and marks a key point for vessels traveling between both sea areas.
The tower was built in 1882 to guide ships traveling between the Taiwan Strait and Pacific Ocean. After pirate attacks in the region, it received fortified walls and defensive installations that remain standing today.
The name Eluanbi means "Cape of Sails," recalling the many vessels that once passed this shoreline. Inside, the maritime museum displays original navigation tools that sailors relied on in these waters.
Provincial Highway 26 leads directly to the site, or visitors can take bus routes 8249 and 9188 from Hengchun Transfer Station. Access to the tower and surrounding park is generally available during daylight hours, with the viewing platform offering open views of both sea areas.
The fortifications with gun slits and thick stone walls make this the only armed lighthouse in Taiwan. These defensive features are visible throughout the grounds and tell of a time when coastal installations faced frequent attacks.
