Kenting National Park, National park at Hengchun Peninsula, Taiwan
Kenting National Park is a protected area on the Hengchun Peninsula at the southern tip of Taiwan, covering both land and marine zones. The terrain includes coral reefs, forested hills, limestone caves, and long stretches of coastline facing the South China Sea.
The area became the first national park in Taiwan in 1984, established to protect the tropical ecosystems of the southern peninsula. The Eluanbi Lighthouse was built in 1883 following a series of shipwrecks along the rocky southern coast.
The Spring Scream festival brings live rock and indie bands to the area every March, creating a relaxed gathering of musicians and music fans from across Asia. Visitors during the event notice stages set up near beaches and guesthouses filled with travelers sharing meals and stories.
Buses run regularly from Kaohsiung airport to the park entrance, and several walking trails cross different parts of the reserve. Bicycle rentals are available in towns along the coast, and many paths are wide enough for cycling.
The reserve hosts the world's largest diversity of land crabs, which migrate in large groups across roads and trails during the rainy season. The tropical forests and rocky caves also support 59 species of reptiles and amphibians.
