Houlong Township

Houlong is an urban township in Miaoli County that stretches across land along the Taiwan Strait with relatively low elevation. It sits next to Zaoqiao Township on its inland border.

The area was originally a settlement of Taiwan's indigenous people called Aulangsia and later developed under Kingdom of Tungning influence. It was renamed Kōryū Village in 1920 when the administrative system changed.

The settlement is divided into 23 distinct villages, from Nanlong to Beilong, each maintaining its own local traditions and identity. This arrangement shapes daily community life and gives different areas their own character.

The area has good access through a high-speed rail station and four regular train stations serving the township. Getting around by public transport makes it easy to visit different parts of the area.

The area contains shell fossils at Guogang and the Xihu Wetland with salt marshes and bird life. These places show layers of geological time and remain important habitats for wildlife.
