West Ham, Parliamentary constituency in the United Kingdom, 1997 onwards
West Ham is a constituency of the House of Commons in the London Borough of Newham, in the eastern part of the city. It covers neighborhoods such as Canning Town, Stratford, and Plaistow, all connected by a dense network of roads, trains, and buses.
West Ham was created as a constituency in 1997 by merging parts of neighboring districts. The area had grown up around the docks and factories along the Thames, which employed generations of workers before closing during the 20th century.
West Ham takes its name from an old village that once sat near the river. Queen's Market in Upton Park is an open-air market where traders from many parts of the world sell food, fabrics, and everyday goods, making the diversity of the area immediately visible to any visitor.
The area is well served by the London Underground, Overground, and bus routes, with Stratford acting as a major transport hub for the whole district. Each neighborhood is easy to walk once you arrive, so comfortable shoes and a bit of extra time make the most of a visit.
West Ham was among the first places in England to elect a former film actress to Parliament when Glenda Jackson won her seat here in 1992. She later returned to acting before coming back to politics, giving the constituency an unusual connection between the arts and public life.
