Stratford Langthorne Abbey, Cistercian abbey ruins in West Ham, England
Stratford Langthorne Abbey was a Cistercian monastery whose ruins can still be seen at All Saints West Ham Parish Church. The complex included workshops, mills, and agricultural buildings spread across a large area.
The monastery was founded in 1135 when William de Montfichet donated his lands and forests to the monks. This generous gift allowed the community to develop into a wealthy institution.
The name comes from the long clay soils of the area and the spiritual meaning monks brought to this place. The community shaped the land through their daily work and religious practices.
Stone remains of the monastery are visible at the church, including a medieval window and carved architectural details. Visitors should take time to examine the fine details of the preserved architecture.
Excavations between 1993 and 1994 uncovered 647 burials and revealed insights into medieval medical practices and burial customs. These findings show how people lived and died in that era.
