Broch of Gurness, Iron Age archaeological site in Evie, Scotland

The Broch of Gurness contains a central stone tower with 4-meter-thick walls, three defensive ditches, and remains of surrounding village structures.

Construction of this settlement occurred between 500 and 200 BC, with the main tower reaching 10 meters in height and housing the principal family.

The central structure included stone-built cupboards, two hearths, and galleries between walls, demonstrating advanced architectural techniques of Iron Age Scotland.

The site opens daily from March through September, with entrance fees of £7.50 for adults and £4.50 for children under Historic Scotland management.

Stone-lined graves from the 9th century reveal Norse influence at the site, indicating continued use long after the original settlement was abandoned.
