Knowe of Swandro, Archaeological complex in Rousay, Orkney Islands, Scotland
Knowe of Swandro is an archaeological site on the Rousay coast containing the remains of settlements from different time periods. Stone structures from a Neolithic chamber tomb, Iron Age dwellings, and Pictish buildings lie scattered near the shoreline in layers that span thousands of years.
The site began as a burial place roughly 5,000 years ago and saw occupation by different peoples across the ages. Iron Age inhabitants, Pictish communities, and later Norse settlers each left their mark during periods of continuous use.
The site reveals how people lived and worked across many centuries in this coastal location. Stone tools and marks in the rock show the daily activities of those who made this place their home long ago.
The coastal location is open to visitors during summer months, particularly when archaeological work takes place on site. When planning a visit, be aware that tides affect access, as coastal erosion can change how the remains are exposed or protected.
Constant wave action and storm damage threaten the exposed structures, requiring archaeologists to install protective barriers regularly. This ongoing battle with the sea makes the site a living example of how past discoveries can disappear if not actively safeguarded.
