Crosby Garrett Helmet, Roman cavalry helmet in Crosby Garrett, England
The Crosby Garrett Helmet is a Roman cavalry helmet made from copper alloy featuring a sculpted face mask of a young soldier. A griffin-decorated Phrygian cap sits at its crown, forming the upper portion of this complete piece.
The helmet dates from the late 2nd or 3rd century AD and was discovered in May 2010 by a metal detector enthusiast. This find in Crosby Garrett represents a significant discovery for Roman archaeology in Britain.
The helmet displays Roman military craftsmanship merged with decorative elements possibly representing Paris of Troy, revealing its ceremonial purpose. The blend of protective function and artistic detail shows how much value cavalry soldiers placed on their personal gear.
Extensive restoration was needed after discovery, as the helmet had broken into many pieces. The original visor remained largely intact, allowing specialists to reconstruct this remarkable object.
This is one of only three complete Roman cavalry helmets with visors ever discovered through archaeology in Britain. The fact that it survived so intact makes it extraordinarily valuable for researchers studying Roman military equipment.
