Salford, Metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England
Salford is a district just west of Manchester, divided by the Irwell and made up of several towns including Eccles, Swinton, and Walkden. The borough includes older residential areas as well as newly developed zones along the former docklands, now known as Salford Quays.
The settlement received market rights in the 13th century and grew over centuries as a trading place alongside Manchester. During the 19th century, the area developed into a center of textile manufacturing before being granted city status in 1926.
The city features The Lowry arts complex, Salford Museum and Art Gallery, and Salford Cathedral, which serve as primary cultural destinations for residents.
The M602 motorway and several railway stations including Salford Central and Salford Crescent provide links to the surrounding region, while bus routes connect the individual towns within the borough. Pedestrians can cross the Irwell on several bridges, moving between neighborhoods and into Manchester.
MediaCityUK in Salford Quays houses production studios for BBC and ITV, so visitors occasionally see filming or outside broadcasts taking place. Nearby, the Lowry center combines galleries and theaters under a distinctive silver roof.
