Townhouse Studios, Recording studio in Shepherd's Bush, United Kingdom
Townhouse Studios was a recording facility with three main rooms located at 140 Goldhawk Road in west London. Each space was outfitted with professional recording equipment designed to capture high-quality sound for album production.
Virgin Records founded the studios in 1978, establishing it as a pioneering recording facility with advanced mixing technology. The facility changed hands several times before Universal shut it down in 2008, ending its more than 30-year operation.
The place drew musicians from rock, pop, and other genres who came to record landmark albums. Artists were attracted by the studio's reputation for high-quality production and its role in shaping the sound of their era.
The location is no longer accessible to the public since the studios closed, but the building remains visible on Goldhawk Road. Visitors can walk past to see the exterior and imagine the creative work that took place inside.
Studio Two contained a specially designed room whose acoustic properties became known for capturing distinctive drum sounds. This particular feature helped producers create some of the most recognizable percussion recordings in popular music history.
