Old Church of St Nicholas, Uphill

The Old Church of St Nicholas stands on a limestone cliff, featuring a central three-stage tower, chancel, and an open-air nave without a roof.

Construction of this Norman stone church began in 1001, with regular religious services continuing until their transfer to a new church building in 1846.

Three carved stone sundials remain on the church walls, including one with Saxo-Norman features on the south face of the tower.

Visitors can access the church on Sunday afternoons and bank holidays between Easter and September, with additional opening times listed on social media.

The church structure overlooks Weston Bay and the River Axe mouth, situated within Uphill Cliff Site of Special Scientific Interest with rare grass species.
